Girly Overload

Posted in Glitter, jelly, Pink with tags , , , , on July 7, 2009 by Amanda Frankenpolish

I’d like to thank everyone that voted on my poll! I always love input from readers, and like to know what kind of polishes you all like to see! :-)

I’ve been catching up on reader requests, inventing some cool new frankens, and I will be having my first ever giveaway *very* soon!

Today’s franken is a sweet combination of our top two contenders for what you wanted more of…jelly and glitter. It is also a super duper girly color! I used an ancient Parfait brand pink creme (of course if you don’t have an antique pink laying around, feel free to substitute), New York Summer Alpha Jewel glitter, and Maybelline clear topcoat.

I poured 1/3 each of the pink and clear into an empty bottle, then mixed in 2/3 of Alpha Jewel glitter.

Bubble gum pink with a twist! Shiny and glittery! My nails haven’t been behaving lately, so I have been forced to keep them shorter than I prefer.

Thanks for looking, franken-friends! I shall return with more goodies for you soon.

Swimming on Neptune

Posted in Blue, Duochromes, Pink with tags , , , , , , , , on June 25, 2009 by Amanda Frankenpolish

All aboard…next stop…Neptune! Here’s a fun fact…did you know that the planet Neptune was named after the Roman god of the sea? When I think of the sea, I think of swimming…so that’s where the name for my franken came from.

I’ve experimented with different colors for each of my duochromes, and the possibilities are endless. The neat thing about these Planetary pigments are that they look different when mixed with alternate colors.

For today’s franken, I used Revlon Color in True Camisole, which is a sheer pink, and Travel to Neptune pigment from TKB Trading. Travel to Neptune is a shimmery pink with a strong blue flash. I filled a 0.25 oz bottle 3/4 full with True Camisole, then added in 1 teaspoon of Neptune pigment.

I love how this one turned out! It’s like OPI Rosey Future on steroids!

The great thing about these pigments is that even when mixed with a sheer or clear polish, they are completely opaque in 2 thin coats!

Of course it has been raining here for a week straight, so sadly, I had no sun to work with. The blue flash in this is really more vibrant in real life.
Thanks for looking, and hopefully you aren’t tired of duochromes yet because I still have a few more for you!

Bad Medicine

Posted in Glitter, Pink, Red with tags , , , , , on May 20, 2009 by Amanda Frankenpolish

As promised…I have another mega glitter for you today!

For this one, I used Color Club Sex Symbol silver glitter, Jade Asteroid Caress, and Martha Stewart fine glitter in Garnet.

Photobucket

I filled an empty bottle half full with Sex Symbol, then added 1/3 of Asteroid Caress. I then added in 2 tablespoons of Garnet glitter, and mixed it well.

Photobucket

I was a tad let down because this one doesn’t look very impressive in the bottle. On my nails, however, it really dazzles!

Photobucket

There wasn’t much sun today, but here is a close up in overcast natural light…

Photobucket

Now, I had a lot of trouble thinking of a name for this one. After staring at the picture for days, the song “Bad Medicine” by Bon Jovi (yes…go ahead and laugh…I was totally born in the 80′s!) popped into my head. I have no idea why, but it seemed like a fitting name.
:-P
I have more glitter coming up, so check back!

Berry Lemonade

Posted in jelly, Pink with tags , on May 8, 2009 by Amanda Frankenpolish

What is better than a pretty summer pink? A pretty summer JELLY pink!

For this one, I used Revlon Colorstay in clear, and NYC Pink Pomegranate Creme. Simple & easy!

Photobucket

I used equal quantities of each, mixing them into an empty bottle. Not only are jelly polishes gorgeous, but they are very easy to make!

Photobucket

Yum! Berry Lemonade! I used three coats, and it covered well and is super shiny.

Photobucket

I have another jelly coming up, and as always, give me a shout if there’s a color you’d like to see!

Unicorn Tears

I promise, this isn’t another Alien Donut Sprinkles…this is a pretty franken!

Everyone needs a little silliness in their life…and what better than funny named nail polish? Scrangie, who not only has gorgeous nails and one of my favorite blogs, is a hilarious girl that always makes me laugh. She actually came up with “Unicorn Tears”, and let me use it as a franken name.
:-)
The beautiful pigment samples I got from Lynn seemed like an excellent choice for such a franken. MAC Reflects Very Pink is super glittery and just screams “Unicorn Tears” (well, to me at least)! I had a spare bottle of Revlon Colorstay Golden Sparks that I thought would work perfectly with the pigment.

Photobucket

I filled an empty bottle 3/4 full with Gold Sparks and added 1 tablespoon of Reflects Very Pink pigment. Even with vigorous shaking, the pigment settled a little bit (certainly not enough to render the polish unusable).

Photobucket

I solved the settling problem by simply rolling the bottle in my hand a few times before using it. I used three coats for my mani.

Photobucket

And here’s a close up that really shows the beautiful pink and gold micro glitter…

Photobucket

So there you have it…Unicorn Tears!

Candy City

Ok, here is the last of my glitters…for now!

For this one, I used Wet N’ Wild Psycho, Wet ‘N Wild clear, and NYC Pink Promenade.

Photobucket

I filled up an empty bottle half full with WnW Psycho, then added 1/4 each of clear and NYC Pink Promenade. The result is a pinkish coral jelly, with beautiful sparkle!

Photobucket

It looks like candy on my nails! Tasty, sparkley candy!

I just love jelly polishes…and I have a very special one coming up very soon, so check back!

The Matte Family Has Expanded!

Posted in Gold, matte, Pink, Purple with tags , , , , , , , , on February 23, 2009 by Amanda Frankenpolish

Once I began frankening these matte polishes, I couldn’t stop!

Today I have a few more members of our “matte family”. I think these will be the final bunch…for now.
;-)

As with the rest of the “family”, these were all made with Nailtek Foundation II as a base, and pigment for the colors.

First up, a raspberry pink. This one is a little more vibrant than the previous set of mattes I posted, but hey, a little variety is good! Especially when it looks like this:

And our family wouldn’t be complete without a purple. When I originally decided to do a purple, I was aiming for a dusty grey shade. I fell in love with this cheery grape and didn’t have the heart to tone it down.

Every family has a problem child, and the last polish is it. It seemed like a good idea to include a yellow in the matte collection, but it proved to be a challenge. After a lot of experimenting, I ended up with a weird golden olive color. I wasn’t sure if I liked it or not, but after swatching it, it’s grown on me. I used black, yellow and gold pigments. The gold shimmer is prominent even though this polish has a flat finish…giving it an “antique” look. Definitely not a color for everyone…but I thought I’d include it since it was different!

I had a lot of fun making these matte polishes…I hope you enjoyed them! <3

Uglies? I Think Not!

Posted in Pink, Purple, Recipes, Red with tags , , , , , on February 9, 2009 by Amanda Frankenpolish

Recently, I received some “less-than-desirable” polishes from my friend Michelle at A Stroke of Color.  She was confident that I would be able to doctor these into something a little more appealing.  Mission accepted!
Photobucket

Now, these are both Sally Hansen polishes & I’ve peeled the labels off (of course!).  We will start with the darker, metallic rose colored polish. It isn’t too horrible…but can certainly be improved! Since it is a full bottle, I am going to split it in half and make two different frankens from it.
Photobucket
Now that the polish is divided, I’ve chosen some colors to add in: Wet N Wild Black Creme, Essie Who’s She Red, and Revlon Colorstay clear.
Photobucket
I added 1/4 of Essie Who’s She Red, and 1/4 clear into one of the bottles. The Essie is a very opaque red creme, so adding some clear polish gives the mixture a bit of a shiny “jelly” finish. And by using a creme polish, I’ve toned down the metallic properties in the original polish. After adding in a couple ballz and shaking, we now have a lovely dark pink shimmer!

I’m very pleased with how this turned out! The color is very versatile, and would look great on a variety of skin tones.
Now let’s not forget the second bottle we set aside! For this one, we’ll keep it simple and just add in 1/2 Wet N Wild Black creme. I love using black to franken with because it is a simple way to completely change the appearance of a polish. Remember our metallic rose we started with? Well, take a look at it now:

This vampy purple has a beautiful deep shimmer that almost glows! It reminds me a lot of OPI’s now discontinued Black Tie Optional.

Thanks, Michelle, for sending me these polishes to work with!
